Overview of ICCIE 2017 Exhibitions

ICCIE 2017 is held in Beijing from September 11 through 13, 2017. This year, the event is held under the theme of “Blending Culture and Technology for Inheritance and Innovative Development”. A platform combining comprehensive activities, exhibitions, trading promotions, forums and conventions, creative activities and sub-venues was carefully built. The main venue is China International Exhibition Centre (Old Centre). The exhibition covers a total area of 55,000 m2, with 20 thematic exhibitions. Meanwhile, nine sessions of creative activities will be held, and 52 sub-venues spread all over Beijing.

The UNESCO, the EU-China Belt & Road Cultural Tourism Development Committee, the World Trade Centers Association, the International Federation of Multimedia Associations and other international organizations, and 69 delegations from 59 countries and regions including the U.S., France, Britain and Italy will attend the exhibition, and so will delegations from 26 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities such as Tianjin, Hebei, Shanghai, Shanxi, Anhui and Sichuan. More than 1,800 enterprises will be present.  

Original Arts and Crafts with Infinite Value Showcase the Power of National Culture

In the exhibition area for arts and crafts, a number of grand arts and crafts with exquisite craftsmanship are very eye-catching. In the main exhibition area, more than 100 products winning the 2017“Gongmei Cup” Beijing Arts and Crafts Innovative Design Competition will be put on display. With the aim of “making life more beautiful with creative design”, these award-winning works highlight a combination of traditional culture and modern elements, to enrich and expand the application fields and markets of arts and crafts. Meanwhile, there will be an exhibition area for excellent arts and crafts enterprises and an onsite demonstration area for masters of folk arts and crafts. In the Ailifang Exhibition Area of Beijing Disabled Persons Federation, creative works of disabled people will be put on display, including Cao’s kites, "Jing" embroidery, inside-bottle paintings, walnut works, clay figures, wheat straw paintings and Tengshi cloth paste painting.

In the exhibition area for cultural tourism spots and tourist goods, on display are specialty consumption resources, new operational types of tourism and achievements of the industry. Time-honored brands and intangible cultural heritage are the treasure of traditional culture. Featuring time-honored brands from Beijing, the area mainly displays a series of food from Beijing, to continue to promote cooperation between time-honoured brands and “Beijing Gifts”. The aim is to showcase the new development and new landscape of the capital city’s tourism commodity industry guided by the “Beijing Gifts” brand in enriching variety, improving quality and fostering brands, as well as to display gourmet foods in Beijing. Intangible cultural heritage masters in the categories of lacquerware, carved lacquerware, Kumadori, filigree, cloisonne, Beijing gourd paintings, inside-bottle paintings for snuff bottles will give on-the-spot demonstration of their unique skills.

Regions across China will display their specialty arts and crafts and have a feast of traditional Chinese culture industry. Inner Mongolia explores its cultural relics, with 15 enterprises from the autonomous region to present a series of gifts from the grassland. During the event, visitors will find an eyeful of traditional arts and crafts. Silver ornaments and stationery show national features; sports kettles made from new materials are bagging pot-shaped, blending traditional and modern elements. Animation images of the Mongol nationality are full of creative ideas. Ningbo is known for its majestic commercial culture. This time, the Ningbo pavilion fully taps into the value of scholar atmosphere in the business world. The main exhibit is Longweishan House, an ink stone workshop, with great ingenuity. Ningbo people have built a heritage brand of Longweishan House out of traditional culture, and the brand has become a paradigm of high-end traditional culture. Under the theme of “Traditional Handicraft in Modern Life”, the exhibition group from Anhui combines traditional arts and crafts with “Internet+”. They will display traditional arts and crafts, as well as culture and creative products from the province. Writing brushes, ink sticks, ink slabs and paper, which are the main traditional arts and crafts of Anhui Province, and related creative products, will be on display. The exhibition group from Guangxi features cultural creative products of seven series, including cultural creative products about Belt & Road in Guangxi, historical culture, landscape culture, marine culture, border culture, national culture and red revolutionary culture.

Taiwanese cultural creative exhibition area gathers more than 20 high-quality exhibitors. With the theme of “Read Taiwan”, the exhibits include such culture and creation products as boutique goods, arts and crafts, creative design, educational toys and Taiwanese tea. Walking into this exhibition area is like opening a guide book to Taiwanese cultural creative book full of traditional customs, with modern creative thinking and rich humanistic spirit. It provides insight into Taiwanese latest design and creative aesthetics of life, as well as the value of Taiwanese brands and culture.

“Culture+” Creative Culture Business Formats, the Most Traditional Turns into the Most Fashionable

The exhibition area for culture and creative products and museum-related cultural relics highlights a combination of cultural creative ideas and science/technology development. It consists of museum creative industry, integrated culture of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, museum and technology exhibition. Out of the 92 demonstration units of China’s museum culture industry announced by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, 22 located in Beijing are selected for the exhibition. The exhibition highlights excellent museum-representing creative products and VR technology, science and technology exhibition facilities and digital cultural relic restoration products from the demonstration units. Meanwhile, excellent non-state-owned museums including Beijing Auto Museum and Beijing Old Phone Museum will attend the exhibition, showcasing the features of non-governmental museums, and displaying the common development of museums. Guangxi Museum Association gathers 10-odd museums from the autonomous region including BeihaiHepu Museum for Culture of Han Dynasty, to exhibit museum-related cultural creative products.

Featuring a brand-new 3D presentation approach, the exhibition area for creative arts and crafts from Chinese and overseas renowned museums display exquisite collections in holographic images. Craftsmen will produce handiworks in a virtual environment, where the audience can take part.

Chinese characters are the living fossil of Chinese culture. Brand-new cultural business formats are created. The showroom for Chinese characters at the ICCIE is an independently developed interactive experience paradise for Chinese characters. With Chinese characters as core elements, and experiential activities as link, the pavilion utilizes new media for presentation and interactive science population mode, aiming to guide visitors to complete the process of exploration, discovery and re-discovery. Participating in the experiential activities, visitors can explore the history of Chinese characters, discern the beauty of Chinese characters and get a taste of Chinese wisdom hidden in them.

Languages are one of the most ancient cultures. At present, China’s language industry is growing in size and strength. Language technology, especially language intelligence technology, is advancing by leaps and bounds. Emerging language industries like speech synthesis, speech recognition, text recognition, machine translation and language rehabilitation are becoming new growth points of the economy. The China Internet Network Information Center predicts that the Chinese speech market is worth RMB130 billion. Time-honored culture is quickly becoming the trendiest industry. At ICCIE 2017, to vigorously promote the prosperity of the language and culture industry, the exhibition area for the international language industry will be set up, to fill in a blank of language theme exposition in the world’s Chinese-speaking regions. This area will present achievements made by China in linguistic and cultural development since the beginning of the 13th Five-year Plan period, and display linguistic and cultural exchanges under the Belt & Road initiative, and achievements in the inheritance and preservation of language and culture, especially intangible heritage. With a large quantity of pictures and physical interaction, the focus is placed on the development of modern language technology and industry in China. More than ten domestic and overseas well-known language and culture firms will attend the event, displaying the up-to-the-minute language technology and products.

The exhibition area for sports industry will highlight winter sports, winter sports industry, Olympic culture and national fitness. In the area for winter sports industry, on display are snow making equipment, ski resorts facilities, ski equipment and gear, and large ski resorts of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, and online winter sports firms will be promoted. Exhibitions for the sports industry have always been stressing interactive experiences. This time, visitors are introduced those projects they have little access to in daily life, and get a full taste of Olympic sports, such as simulated curling experiences and sports 3D simulated ski gear experiences. In the exhibition area for cultural tourist attractions and tourist commodities, achievements of the recreation tourism in suburbs of Beijing will be displayed, including featured folk houses, traditional villages and recreation trails, to promote tourist spending.


Showcasing the Capital City’s Culture, Promoting the Development of the National Cultural Center

In 2016, Beijing’s cultural creative industry posted an added value of RMB357.05 billion, taking up 14.3% in the area’s total output value. The cultural creative industry has become a pillar sector in this city. On June 15, 2016, Beijing officially released the Plan on Strengthening the National Culture Center during the 13th Five-year Plan Period. For the first time, the plan on strengthening the national cultural center was taken as a key municipal-level special plan. On August 17, 2017, Beijing set up the Leading Group for Promoting the National Cultural Center. Efforts are made in an orderly manner to promote the national cultural center.

At ICCIE 2017, Beijing will showcase its capital culture and the culture of a major nation. Dongcheng District will fully present its drama culture, and display its advantages in drama ecology, including drama talents, drama plays or operas, drama organizations, performances, exchanges and spending, highlighting the district’s influence as the national drama center. It will showcase its leading edge in cultural performances, artwork transactions, omnimedia publishing and cultural tourism, and display the achievements of building a national demonstration area for cultural and financial cooperation and promoting the cultural element market. Featuring the high-end positioning as Beijing’s sub-center, the exhibition area for Tongzhou District will promote specialty cultural industry projects, such as the Grand Canal Culture Belt, Universal Studios, Taihu Entertainment Town, and Songzhuang Gathering Area for Cultural Creative Industry. The theme of the exhibition area for Mentougou District is the living inheritance and industrialization of intangible cultural heritage and Daxishan Culture. By giving a systematic presentation of ancient villages and ancient paths, religious temples and folk customs, and by displaying a large quantity of innovative creative products, the district interprets and introduces Daxishan Culture, and builds Yongding River cultural brand. Changping District will attend the exhibition under the theme of “Cultural Changping, a New Area of Science Education”. The exhibition area gathers key projects and enterprises including Grand Canal Baifuquan Relics Project, Cultural Tourism Project of Ming Tombs Gate Area, and Cultural Creative Big Data Industry Park of Changping New City East Zone. On display are Historical and Cultural Book Series of Changping, and cutting-edge technology products like Car Robots mart vehicle-mounted robots, original parent-child board role-playing games, Beidou+GPS dual-system terminals. Certainly, “the Capital of Magic Tricks” will present magic shows. The interactive electromagnetic magic trick show is more than fantastic.


Displaying Cultural Highlights in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, and Promoting Cultural Cooperation between the Three Areas

Cultural cooperation is an important part of coordinated development between Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei. The three cultural belts of the Grand Canal, the Great Wall and Xishan Yongding River involve Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, and have become the bridge and link for regional coordinated development. At the main venue, there will be an exhibition area for Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Cultural Coordinated Development and an exhibition area for Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Canal Culture, to fully display the fruitful achievements of cultural innovation development. Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Canal Culture Exhibition will make its debut by displaying abundant first-hand material gathered at the site, and presenting a vivid cultural landscape of the canal basin in the blend of history and reality.  

The exhibition area for culture and creative products and museum-related cultural relics features Yan Tour project developed jointly by the museums from Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei. Beijing Museum of Western Zhou Dynasty Relics, Hebei Museum, Tianjin Museum, Tangshan Museum, Langfang Museum and Yanxiadu Cultural Relics will attend the exhibition. The exhibition of arts and crafts is the display area for Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Arts and Crafts Coordinated Development. The arts and crafts industry of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei will jointly display achievements of collaboration between the areas and choice works created by some masters in recent the years. Featuring Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Coordinated Development, the exhibition area for Tongzhou promotes the integrated development of Tongzhou, Wuqing and Langfang, to optimize allocation and mutually complement advantages on a higher level, broadly and connect projects and realize industry integration, forming a favorable development pattern.


Promoting Chinese Culture Abroad under the “Belt & Road” Initiative

Promoting Chinese culture abroad is a grand cause that brings a pressing need to narrate Chinese stories to the world. The “Belt & Road” initiative provides immense opportunities for promoting China’s cultural industry abroad.

ICCIE 2017 is notably more internationalized than ever. There is a significant increase in the number of foreign exhibitors. They will actively display their native culture, promote local cultural projects and seek opportunities for cooperation. In the exhibition area for creative arts and crafts from domestic and overseas well-known museums and the exhibition area for creative design works of international craftsmen, museum collections from various countries and choice artworks will be put on display. Guardian Fine Art Asia selects excellent art galleries from the world art network, attracting nearly 40 renowned art institutions and art galleries from more than ten countries, to jointly build an international trading platform for high-quality cultural artworks.

The “Dazzling World –Exhibition of Distinctive Culture of Countries along the Belt & Road” creates a strong internationalized atmosphere. Embassies in China from 45 countries along the “Belt & Road” including Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Iran, with international institutions like the Representative Office in China of the Arab League, will attend the exhibition. They will display their cultural resources, educational resources and tourism resources, and showcase their unique regional and national customs. Museums lay a solid foundation for the “Belt & Road” culture. Guangxi features the history and culture of Hepu as the port of departure of the Maritime Silk Road. Hepu Museum for Culture of the Han Dynasty will display a series of cultural creative products, including the Phoenix Light series, such as bronze Phoenix Lights, Phoenix Light ties and scarves, Phoenix Light bamboo-weaved handbags, Phoenix Lighttable flags, Phoenix Light cushions, Phoenix Light bags, and Three Rams Bring Bliss series, such as tea canisters and censers.

With the expansion of countries covered by the “Belt & Road” initiative, hundreds of languages have been involved including ethnic languages. This generates inestimable huge demand for language services. Seizing the favorable opportunity, the exhibition area for the international language industry gathers 64 countries along the “Belt & Road”, which showcase their language culture and intangible cultural heritage exhibits. The aim is to promote Chinese culture abroad and blend in the international community. The exhibition also includes “Belt & Road” language and culture interactive experiences, such as Mud Cluckfield fabrication, movable-type printing experience, New Year pictures production experience, on-the-spot teaching of Womanese script, and dictation competition of Chinese characters. Celebrated artists, intangible cultural heritage inheritors and Chinese and overseas language arts lovers will put on live performances. The audience will get a taste of diverse cultures. They can also operate printing presses and high-tech voice-input devices, to get a sense of the rapid development of verbal communication technology. Ambassadors, counselors, government officials, Dean of Confucius institutes and domestic and overseas cultural celebrities from countries along the “Belt & Road” such as Saudi Arabia, Israel, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Georgia and Ukraine will attend the exhibition.


Encouraging Youth to Serve the Country, Promoting Innovation and Entrepreneurship by Youth

The exhibition area for excellent youth cultural and creative works from Beijing is aimed to encourage young people to serve the country. In this exhibition area, CAFA Maker and Hero Entertainment will showcase results of youth innovation and creation. From Bodhi Tangka, lacquer tea table to digital stores, “Internet+ Creative” and IoT teaching, the exhibition blends traditional and modern elements. The Exhibition of Excellent Enterprises from Beijing Cultural Creative I&E Competition will gather a number of promising cultural entrepreneurial talents and creative I&E projects, including OMESCAPE, Filigree, Happy Eggs, Genworks, Da Xiao Mu Zuo, Animation Mass Production, CarRobot and Fashion Beijing Opera, highlighting the interaction and attraction of cultural creative projects.

All exhibits of the Capital College Students’ Innovative & Creative Works are the latest technological innovation works of current college students from Beijing. These works display the innovation capability of college students of the day. The creative works are technologically sophisticated and broadly practical, and they can be turned into products much more easily than before. Works like the Evadible Load Handling Trolley presented by Beijing University of Technology, Diary of College-Graduate Village Officials by Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication and Pan Embroidery of Tu People by Beijing Institute of Clothing Technology display the characteristics of their schools. The Evadible Load Handling Trolley won First Prize of the Helping the Elderly Section of 2016 RoboCup.Pan Embroidery of Tu People combines Pan embroidery and leather carving. Innovation is made on the basis of traditional craftsmanship, to create works that are in line with the times.

The Seventh Capital College Students’ Creative Fair promotes the translation of college students’ creative works, providing an I&E platform for the students. In 2017, the fair will be held in Xiongan New Area, the first time outside Beijing. All works on display at the fair are original. A jury will be formed by experts, scholars and representatives from well-known firms, to select 50 Creative Stars of Colleges and Universities of Beijing. A large number of business executives and industry leaders will take part in the activities. When the fair is over, opportunities will be provided to translate the creative works of some award-winning individuals and groups at BIFTWORKS and the “2017 Chinese Opera Culture Week” at Beijing Garden Expo Parks.

At the Exhibition of Capital College Students’ Innovative & Creative Works, there will be a fair for college students’ creative works. At the fair, every work for sale is a unique, creative, and carefully made artwork. College students will promote their creative ideas, to put to test and revamp their future entrepreneurial model in the marketplace.
